If you’re like me, you may have been stuck at home for the past several days. And if you’re still like me, you may be stuck for a long while. Working from home is a new experience for me. But one thing I’m very used to is being productive with sound from a TV going in the background.
And since there are no sports for a while, I decided to start putting in some old DVD’s and blu rays that I hadn’t touched in a few years. Not surprisingly, that move has rekindled my affinity for some of what I would consider my all time favorites, as well as some guilty pleasures that may have that smushed green tomato icon next to its RT score.
Well after what has now been dozens of hours of rewatches this past week, I thought I’d share some personal favorites of mine for anyone who might be burnt out from the infinite choice loops that have you scrolling through Netflix or Hulu titles for an hour at a time.
Many of these are relatively older titles (some well over twenty years at this point), so they may not be anywhere on your radar. I narrowed this list down to exclude any movies already considered great by the masses, cuz I don’t think anyone needs to recommend those types of movies since you already know about them. And again, some of these are ones I adore even though the general public didn’t seem to fond of at the time.
Disclosure: I’m a straight, white male who spent his teenage years in the mid to late 90’s, and some of these movies were tailor made for my demographic, so just keep that in mind.
Before the films, I’d like to mention two television series you can stream right now that I feel deserve more attention than they get:
Flight of the Conchords (2007-2009)
Current streaming platform: Amazon Prime
This dry-ish comedy set in NY, about a naïve two-man novelty band and their equally buffoonish manager from New Zealand lasted two seasons on HBO, and is one of my all time favorite TV shows. Also comes with their original music!
The Inbetweeners (2008-2010)
Current streaming platform: Netflix
A british show with a lot of vulgar, centered around four awkward teenage boys who are basically just trying to get laid. The dialogue and sex jokes make American Pie look like Mr Rogers‘ Neighborhood. Probably not one you would want to watch with your mum. After the series ended, they made two movies that were just as hilarious, and worth checking out after experiencing the TV series.
And now on to the movies, which I categorized as best I could:
Some Horror To Kick Things Off
The Babadook (2014)
Bone Tomahawk (2015)
Comedies That Revolve Around High Schoolers
Outside Providence (1999)
Detroit Rock City (1999)
Eurotrip (2004)
Wet Hot American Summer (2001)
These Movies Take Place In The Cold, Cold Snow
Mystery, Alaska (1999)
Out Cold (2001)
The Grey (2011)
Night Time In The Concrete Jungle
Judgment Night (1993)
Attack The Block (2011)
A Couple 80’s Movies That Will Make You Go WTF
Meet the Feebles (1989)
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
Two More That Are Well Worth Your Time
Sunshine (2007)
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels (1998)
